If you’re on holiday in and around Killorglin there are some great places to get fresh fish.
Simply cooked, served with potatoes, salad and a glass of white wine – what more can you ask for!?
Here are our five favourites for everything from mackerel to mussels and turbot to trout.
1. Quinlans in Killorglin
We usually pop into Quinlans at least once a week.
It’s on the Square in Killorglin so super convenient.
They have a good selection – hake, pollock, monk, squid, skate and more – all weather dependent of course.
If you don’t fancy cooking they also serve the best fish and chips in town.
2. Glenbeigh Shellfish
For fresh mussels we go to Glenbeigh Shellfish.
They generally only do wholesale and it’s not the easiest place to find, but we love that sort of thing.
The mussels are delicious, super fresh and great value – the perfect combo. They also sell cockles and periwinkles which I must pick up a bag of soon.
It’s always worth calling before just to make sure they’re not out making deliveries and to check availability.
3. Spillane’s in Fossa
Whenever we’re in Killarney we tend to pop into Spillane’s on the way home.
Similar to Glenbeigh Shellfish, Spillanes cater primarily to restaurants and hotels.
The fish is incredibly fresh, great value and as with Quinlans, the range is weather dependent.
4. Lynch’s in Kells
If you like fresh lobster drive to Kells Bay and make you’re way to Lynch’s.
They are just up the road from the pier but it’s always best to call before (+353669477720).
There lobsters are always super fresh, and are caught in and around the bay.
What more could you ask for?
5. Catch your own
Well, actually there is – catching your own!
That’s why at the house we have a few rods which you’re more than welcome to use.
Fresh trout, caught on the lake and grilled on the barbecue – heaven!
If you’re more of a ‘pro’, you can also buy rods and tackle at Boyles in Killorglin and hire boats from Mike O’Shea, the local fishery manager (+353872213835 or uppercaraghmanager@msn.com).
There are also plenty of opportunities for sea fishing, whether on the beach in Cromane or Rossbeigh, or deep sea angling in Portmagee.
So.. fresh fish galore, alive alive oh!
